Financial education refers to the set of skills and knowledge developed to understand and effectively manage one’s finances. A solid foundation of financial literacy is essential to financial health!
Managing money is an important skill. It takes time and effort to develop this skill. Despite its importance in all of our lives there is very little emphasis in teaching young people these valuable skills. Sometimes it seems that our parents leave it up to the schools and the schools leave it up to our parents. It is further complicated because financial literacy is more than skills and knowledge, it also involves beliefs, attitudes, values and behavior. Only you can evaluate your money mindset and make changes to your beliefs, attitudes, values and behaviors.
Despite its importance in our lives, many young people feel unsure about how to start managing their money. The good news is that you can take control of your money management and change your money mindset whether you have a lot or a little money (ie: a college student). You can take comfort in knowing that you are not alone; 84% of college students want more information on financial management.
A resource that is free and available to you to start on your own path to improving your own financial literacy is College in Colorado, a program developed by the Department of Higher Education.
